Yankees vs. Red Sox delayed by squirrel on field in bizarre scene

NEW YORK On Friday night, at the top of the fourth inning of a scoreless game against the Red Sox, Yankees star Max Fried had a visitor on the mound.

No, it wasn’t pitching coach Matt Blake or Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Behind Fried, all four infielders remained in their positions.

It was a squirrel.

Before heading to the mound, the squirrel ran into Boston’s rookie outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia near the Red Sox dugout on the third base line.

After that, Fried watched the squirrel settle in, standing on the dirt for a short while before scuttling off in the direction of first base.

A few seconds later, it came very close to Ben Rice but swerved around him and scooted down the right-field line into foul territory.

Here are some other videos of the incident, a strange scene that briefly halted Friday night’s game:

Play eventually started up again, but the squirrel wasn’t finished.

For the last few pitches of the inning, it ran back onto the field. Red Sox second baseman Ceddanne Rafaela grounded out to Anthony Volpe at shortstop to end the frame, but the squirrel was in fair area on the right field grass, comparatively close to right fielder Cody Bellinger.

In right field, television cameras even captured the squirrel eating on what appeared to be a peanut on the warning track.
