NEW YORK: Amed Rosario, a bench hitter, was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday morning due to a chest contusion, which hurt the Yankees’ depth.
On Friday night, during Devin Williams’ dismal tenth inning, Rosario was hurt when he collided with the wall in right field. The Yankees have officially diagnosed a sprain of the left SC joint.
Catcher J.C. Escarrawas replaced the veteran on the active roster after being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
It is anticipated that the veteran utility man will only be on the field for a short time. Since he collided with the wall on Friday, Rosario’s physical condition has been improving on a day-to-day basis; nonetheless, the Yankees did not want to play short for a number of consecutive days while he recovers.
Through the Yankees interpreter, Rosario stated, “The plan is to return when the ten days are up.”
Prior to the trade deadline last month, Rosario was acquired from the Nationals in exchange for two prospects. He will be placed on the injured list alongside outfielder Austin Slater, another deadline addition who suffered injuries during his first few games in pinstripes. Slater had a hamstring strain this past week while sprinting out a ground ball in Texas, and he will be out for four to six weeks.
The Yankees have fewer right-handed players on their bench now that Rosario and Slater are both out. Although Giancarlo Stanton hasn’t been starting against righties lately and Jos Caballero is still available as a Yankees deadline addition, manager Aaron Boone will lose some of that late-inning flexibility while those bench bats are out.
Boone expressed hope that it will only be the ten days for Rosario.
