This is an Associated Press WNBA story:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minnesota Lynx have continued their strong play after nearly winning the WNBA title the previous season.

However, as demonstrated by their recent acquisition of DiJonai Carrington, they were clearly not content with the current quo. The 2024 All-Defensive First Team pick and Most Improved Player award winner has strengthened the league leader’s depth, added a little two-way enthusiasm to a team that was already committed, and made a smooth transition following the midseason swap.

According to starting forward Bridget Carleton, she has been a terrific addition. It has never been easy to play against her. She simply plays hard every single possession and is fierce, competitive, and driven to win.

The Lynx haven’t skipped a beat despite star Napheesa Collier being sidelined due to a sprained right ankle. At 27-5, they lead by six games and are rapidly moving up to the No. 1 overall seed for the playoffs.

Associate head coach Eric Thibault stated, “You just want to feel like you’re a better team when she returns, that you’ve figured some things out, and that people are playing with confidence.” The mentality of our organization is correct. Not a single person feels sorry for us or anything. We simply go out and fight.

On August 3, Carrington was acquired from the Dallas Wings in exchange for Minnesota’s 2027 second-round selection pick, injured guard Karlie Samuelson, and backup forward Diamond Miller.e

Carrington came at a cost, as Miller was selected with the second overall choice in the 2023 draft. With Collier in her prime and an experienced lineup surrounding her, including two-time All-Star point guard Courtney Williams, five-time All-Star shooting guard Kayla McBride, and shot-blocking expert Alanna Smith patrolling the post, head coach and president of basketball operations Cheryl Reeve, who is vying for a fifth championship with Minnesota, has this team in win-now mode.

“This is a winning organization, and I am a winner,” Carrington declared.

Earlier this year, the 5-foot-11 San Diego native, who spent her first four seasons in the WNBA with the Connecticut Sun, was traded to Dallas. In 20 games with the Wings, she averaged 5.1 rebounds, which was a career high.

Carrington had 40 points, 12 rebounds, and six steals in three games since the trade—and, ironically, since Collier’s injury. In retaliation for their overtime loss in New York in the WNBA Finals last year, the Lynx enter Saturday’s game against the reigning champion New York Liberty, whom they have already defeated twice this month, on a five-game winning run.

Carrington, who finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and one block in the final game of the semifinals, captured Reeve’s attention when the Lynx defeated the Sun in a five-game series in the previous round.

The Lynx couldn’t pass on the opportunity this summer to add a perimeter defensive ace who could both relieve some of McBride’s workload and contribute more points off the bench.

As we ran, we thought we might use a little extra assistance, Reeve added. We wanted to keep the group together, but we also felt that we needed a little more because it’s really difficult to accomplish, come back, and get over the hump if you stay exactly the same.

There was already connection because Williams and Natisha Hiedeman played with Carrington with the Sun. Carrington and Smith were already close because they were teammates at Stanford.

Smith compared it to a friend returning home. It felt somewhat like that. I was thrilled. She is a piece that I believe is incredibly beneficial to us and will only help us reach our desired outcome, which is a championship.
