A Utah man has been sentenced to prison for shooting and killing another man outside a Salt Lake City nightclub in 2023. Molitoni Fisiki Vainuku, 24, from West Valley, pleaded guilty to murder, a first-degree felony, admitting that he intentionally shot and killed Halapaini Latu Moala, 22.
On Monday, Third District Judge James Blanch sentenced Vainuku to 15 years to life in prison. He also ordered him to pay $7,000 to the victim’s family through the Utah Office for Victims of Crime.
The shooting happened outside the New Yorker Social Club on June 4, 2023. Moala was at an after-party when one of his friends noticed that Vainuku and his group were staring at him. As Moala and his friends left the club around 4 a.m., Vainuku made a comment directed at him.
