This is an AP story on soccer:
The U.S. national team featured a number of new players on Wednesday for three forthcoming matches against Canada and Ireland, as coach Emma Hayes is taking a vacation from several of her players who are located in Europe.
Rose Lavelle, a midfielder who hasn’t played for the US in almost six months, has made a comeback to the most recent squad.
Following the European season, Lindsey Heaps, Catarina Macario, and Emily Fox were among the players that were granted time off. Defender Naomi Girma, who is recovering from a calf injury, was one exception.
On June 26 in Commerce City, Colorado, and again on June 29 in Cincinnati, the United States will play Ireland. On July 2, the squad travels to Washington, D.C., to play Canada.
Four players—midfielder Sam Meza, defenders Jordyn Bugg, Lilly Reale, and Izzy Rodriguez—have been called up to the national team for the first time. Of the 25 players on the roster, six have not yet played for the senior national team. The youngest player called into camp is Bugg, who is eighteen years old.
As she gets the squad ready for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, Hayes, who took over as national team coach last year, has been searching for new players. She has called up 27 players for the first time to the national squad.
During a conference call, Hayes stated, “I think this is a uniquely different situation, different window, where so many senior players will not be with us in this camp.” Before I qualify for the World Cup, this is most likely the last time I’ll be able to do this.
Lavelle missed the squad this season due to ankle surgery; he last played for the national team in a game against the Netherlands in December. She just came back to play in the National Women’s Soccer League for Gotham FC, her club squad.
Hayes stated, “There are several reasons why we are so thrilled to have her back with us.” First of all, she is an exceptionally talented football player, and her presence and character in the locker room have been greatly missed during the previous six months.
