As part of the county’s seasonal recycling program, Union County residents have multiple options throughout August and September to get rid of dangerous home items, scrap metal, and personal documents.

Throughout Union County, the program offers safe and secure disposal options at specified drop-off locations.

According to Union County Commissioner Chairwoman Lourdes M. Leon, our recycling program provides citizens with a simple and efficient means of helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable future for Union County.

No matter how little you recycle, it can have an impact. In addition to protecting our animals and citizens, properly disposing of waste and unwanted or expired products also keeps them out of landfills. We are dedicated to supporting our community, and it is a positive move that we are all doing together.

Paper Shredding

The mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for Saturday, August 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kean University’s Kean Hall Parking Lot, which is situated at 1000 Morris Ave. in Union. Residents are asked to safely shred personal documents there.

On-site shredding is done for all papers, and the paper is then transported to a recycling center for further processing. If the trucks fill up first, the event will end before 1 p.m.

Union County’s yearly paper shredding program, which takes place from March to October, includes this event. Only sensitive and private documents are to be disposed of during the shredding events. Through their municipal recycling program, residents can recycle many types of materials, including periodicals and junk mail. Before the event, all bindings, big metal or plastic clips, and other accessories should be taken off (staples are acceptable). Wet, damp, or pre-shredded paper will not be accepted.

Scrap Metal Recycling

August also sees the continuation of Union County’s Scrap Metal Recycling Program, which gives locals a chance to recycle a variety of metal products. On Saturday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to noon, there will be a drop-off event at the following locations:

  • Cranford:

Emergency Services Building, 151 Kenilworth Blvd., Kenilworth

  • Rahway:

Rahway River Park (follow Park Drive, Rahway off St. George s Avenue to service yard across from swimming pool)

Bicycles, air conditioners, metal cabinets, appliances, refrigerators (with doors removed), aluminum scrap, and other metal household items are all acceptable. From April through November, the scrap metal program takes place on the first Thursday and third Saturday of every month.

Household Hazardous Waste

On Saturday, September 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Union County will have its next Household Hazardous Waste event at Kean University’s Kean Hall Parking Lot, which is situated at 1000 Morris Ave. in Union. Residents are welcome to bring a range of household chemicals to these events for appropriate disposal or recycling.

Oil-based coatings, motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks, pool chemicals, insecticides, fluorescent lightbulbs, and more are examples of these products. We will not take latex (water-based) wall paint. It is recommended that residents use sawdust, sand, kitty litter, or commercial paint hardener to dry latex paint at home. You can dispose of it in your home trash once it has hardened.
