Two young men are dead, and one suspect is behind bars following a deadly shooting early Saturday morning in downtown San Marcos. Police are now searching for an additional suspect and a key witness as the investigation continues.
According to the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD), officers responded to reports of a shooting around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of San Antonio Street and Guadalupe Street, a busy area in the city’s downtown district.
When officers arrived, they found Anthony Barrera, 24, deceased at the scene. Alek Pacheco, 20, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
By Saturday evening, police had arrested Jermiah Jayden Tobias, 19, in connection with the shooting. He now faces two counts of capital murder and one count of aggravated assault.
Authorities say the shooting stemmed from a fight between two men who knew each other. During the altercation, a third individual allegedly stole a necklace from one of the men involved. Tobias, the fourth person present, then pulled a gun and fired multiple shots. One of the men involved in the fight sustained a graze wound and has since been released from the hospital.
While Tobias is in custody, police are now searching for Avery Saul Bowman Jr., who they believe is also connected to the fatal incident. Investigators are also seeking to identify and speak with a witness who recorded the altercation on their phone.
SMPD is urging anyone with information on Bowman’s whereabouts or who may have captured video footage of the incident to call the San Marcos Police Department at 512-753-2108.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
