Speaking to reporters on Friday, President Donald Trump misspoke about a fundamental aspect of American history.
Trump praised Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that said individual judges cannot issue countrywide injunctions, allowing his executive order banning birthright citizenship to be partially implemented within 30 days. According to Trump, birthright citizenship was established for slave births, not for people trying to take advantage of the immigration system.
He then mentioned the Civil War, although it seemed that he had forgotten when it was over.
Just so you know, they brought some of the worst individuals and cartels into our country by using birthright citizenship. And once more, I argue that the 1800s, after the Civil War ended, were a very difficult time. Trump told reporters, “You take the end day, was it 1869 or whatever.”
However, on that particular day, the lawsuit was filed, and it was resolved quickly after. This had to do with slave children. “Very, very clearly,” he continued, “and I believe we will prevail.”
Trump: “The 1800s, when the Civil War ended, was a very tumultuous period. Was it 1869, if you take the last day? or anything else.7DaJhePIzD pic.twitter.com
Trump was swiftly ridiculed on social media for being unaware of the Civil War’s end date, which was April 1865 following Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Union forces.
The president is a man who is unaware of the end of the Civil War. However, since DEI is unqualified, let’s prohibit him. Alex Cole, a progressive commentator, posted on the social media site X.
Ron Filipkowski, a Trump critic, wrote: I’ve stated repeatedly that he couldn’t pass a US history test in the seventh grade. Every day, he demonstrates it.
What if a Democratic president did this? asked another person. type of thinking hasn’t worked for years, but in this instance, just think of all the stories that would be created if either Obama or Biden made this claim.
Is Donald Trump the most stupid president in history? was the question posed by one account.
U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) implied that Trump would answer incorrectly on the citizenship exam when asked about the Civil War.
He wrote, “I bet this idiot would get the Civil War questions on the citizenship exam wrong.”
Anyone born in the United States is automatically granted birthright citizenship, including children whose mothers are in the country illegally. Shortly after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment to the Constitution established the right.
In the famous 1898 Supreme Court ruling United States v. Wong Kim Ark, the court ruled that the only children who were not granted U.S. citizenship at birth were those born on foreign ships, to members of sovereign Native American tribes, to diplomats who were loyal to another government, and to enemies who were in the country during hostile occupation.
The United States is one of roughly thirty nations that practice birthright citizenship, sometimes known as the “right of the soil” or jus soli. The majority, including Canada and Mexico, are in the Americas.
