Tropical Thunderstorms, Dry Lightning Possible in San Diego This Weekend

Monsoon moisture is expected to bring humid conditions and a chance of tropical thunderstorms to parts of San Diego County as the weekend approaches, according to weather forecasts.

Beginning Friday, residents may experience muggy weather and an uptick in humidity levels, especially in mountainous areas where isolated showers and thunderstorms are most likely to form during the afternoon and evening hours. While the chances of storm activity reaching coastal areas remain low, forecasters caution that it is still a possibility.

According to FOX 5, cloudy skies and elevated moisture levels are likely to develop today across the county, potentially accompanied by virga—a weather phenomenon in which rain appears to fall from clouds but evaporates before hitting the ground.

With the storm system comes the risk of dry lightning, which occurs when lightning strikes while little to no rain reaches the ground. This type of weather poses a heightened fire risk, particularly in dry brush and forest areas common in Southern California. Dry lightning is a recurring threat during the summer monsoon season, which typically lasts through September in the region.

Humidity is expected to decrease slightly by Saturday, though the monsoonal pattern could return again next weekend.

Local officials are urging residents, hikers, and outdoor workers in the mountains and valleys to stay alert to evolving weather conditions and fire safety warnings.
