Today in History: August 19, South African sprinter indicted in girlfriend’s murder

Oscar Pistorius, a sprinter from South Africa, was charged with murder and illegal ammunition possession on August 19, 2013, in Pretoria, South Africa, for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his house on Valentine’s Day 2013. Pistorius insisted he had mistaken her for an intruder. (Pistorius would be convicted of murder and given a prison term; in January 2024, he was granted parole.)

At Salem in the Province of Massachusetts Bay, four men and one woman were killed in 1692 after being found guilty of witchcraft; Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible was based on the tale of one of the men, John Proctor.
