Gloria Gaynor was invited to be honored by President Trump at the Kennedy Center, but Ana Navarro publicly pleaded with her to decline.
On social media on Thursday, the vocal Republican co-host of The View urged the Grammy-winning disco queen to decline her induction into the 2025 class of Kennedy Center Honorees because of the MAGA leader’s divisive opinions and reorganization of the organization’s board.
Trump announced Wednesday that he will conduct the induction ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 7 and named Gaynor as one of five honorees. Sylvester Stallone, KISS, Michael Crawford, and George Strait were the other awardees announced.
Given the president’s anti-trans and anti-community views, which have attracted a lot of condemnation, Navarro cited Gaynor’s ardent LGBTQ+ fan base as justification for her refusal to accept the esteemed award.
At a Miami concert a few years ago, I had the opportunity to meet @gloriagaynor for a short time. Navarrowrote posted on Instagram on Thursday morning. She gave me a keychain that, when pressed, sang out the song “I Will Survive.” To put it mildly, I pressed it till the batteries died during [the] first Trump administration. Trump declared yesterday that he has chosen her to be the recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor, which he intends to host.
Navarro emphasized that she thinks Gaynor should decline the honor, calling the singer a goddess who deserves all the roses that are sent her way.
She went on, “I wish she wouldn’t accept an award from a man who has attacked the history and rights of women, people of color, and LGBTQ people.” Her signature song became an anthem with the aid of the gay community in particular.
Don’t do it, Gloria! Navarro begged the 81-year-old singer as she wrapped off her post, calling Trump a disgrace to the honors and grandeur of the Kennedy Center Honors.
