During a rescue operation at a Belmar beach on Friday night, a teenage swimmer was taken from the ocean and perished, according to NJ Advance Media.
After receiving emergency calls regarding a swimmer in trouble, Belmar Police and Belmar Water Rescue personnel were dispatched to the 8th Avenue beach just after 6:30 p.m. According to Belmar Police Chief Tina Scott, the teenager was discovered unconscious in the ocean off the 7th Avenue beach at 7:29 p.m.
According to Coast Guard Petty Officer Matthew West, local emergency medical personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the beach as rescue teams and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in pulling the teenager from the ocean.
According to Scott, the teenager was taken to Jersey Shore University Hospital and declared deceased there.
Police did not identify the deceased, but according to West, the victim was a teenage female.
According to authorities, a second swimmer was pulled out of the water before police arrived, but he was unharmed.
This week’s second drowning at the Jersey Shore occurred on Friday.
According to investigators, Aman died Monday night after becoming entangled in a rip current while swimming at an unsecured beach in Seaside Heights.
After six more people were saved from the choppy waters that evening, local authorities firmly enforced beach closures after hours.
The National Weather ServiceOn Friday morning and Friday afternoon, the Jersey Shore was at low risk for dangerous rip currents; but, in portions of Monmouth and Ocean counties, the risk increased to a moderate level from 7 p.m. on Friday through Saturday morning.
