Strong Thunderstorms, 40 MPH Winds Hit Parts of the Valley, NWS Warns Residents to Take Shelter

Phoenix, AZ — Portions of the Valley were hit by strong thunderstorms and powerful wind gusts Tuesday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue special weather statements and advisories for several areas, including Mesa, Gilbert, Glendale, and Tolleson.

Just after 4 p.m., the NWS issued an advisory for Mesa and Gilbert, warning of winds reaching 40 mph and advising residents to “seek shelter in a sturdy structure.” That advisory was expected to remain in effect until 4:45 p.m..

Shortly after, forecasters reported a strong thunderstorm moving through Mesa, with residents told to prepare for gusty winds, brief heavy downpours, and embedded lightning.

Another advisory was issued for Glendale and Tolleson in the West Valley, where a storm cell brought torrential rain and strong wind gusts. That warning was expected to remain active until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Storm activity appeared to begin around 3:30 p.m. in northwest Pinal County, gradually moving northwest and affecting areas including Chandler and neighborhoods near Sky Harbor Airport.

Monday’s Dust Storm & Weeklong Outlook

These storms follow Monday’s weather pattern, which saw light morning showers develop into a minor dust storm by evening, sweeping across the southern and central parts of the Phoenix metro area.

Tom Frieders with the NWS reported that while showers would continue into Tuesday, not all areas would see rainfall. “We’re looking at 30% to 40% coverage,” Frieders said. He added that conditions are expected to begin drying out by Wednesday.

Residents are advised to monitor local weather alerts and remain cautious while driving during storm activity, as reduced visibility and slick roads may pose hazards.
