‘Special kind of stupid’: Trump slammed for ‘terrible’ news about the economy

Following the Commerce Department’s final estimate on Thursday that the U.S. GDP dropped to negative for the first quarter of this year, social media users are questioning President Donald Trump.

In the midst of Trump’s escalating trade and tariff fights, the Commerce Department reported that the U.S. gross domestic product, a broad indicator of economic output, fell by -0.5% annually from January to March. Economists were taken aback by the fresh figure, which followed the department’s first estimate of a 0.2% decline in the economy.

Additionally, the estimate revealed that consumer spending decreased, growing by just 0.5% as opposed to 4% in the last quarter of the previous year.

“Many people feel pessimistic about the labor market, even though the hard data isn’t that bad,” MSNBC business analyst Steven Rattner wrote on X.

According to the Associated Press, some people attacked Trump for the new report, which shows that the GDP has shrunk for the first time in three years.
