Smoke and Storms Target Duluth Air Quality Alert and Thunderstorm Risk Through Tuesday Night

Northeast Minnesota is bracing for a double threat as wildfire smoke and summer storms converge over the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Air Quality Alert in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday, with a 60% chance of thunderstorms expected to follow by Tuesday night.

Air Quality Alert: Stay Indoors if Sensitive

Thick smoke from regional wildfires continues to choke skies over Duluth and surrounding areas. The NWS warns that children, seniors, and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions should limit time outdoors and avoid strenuous activity.

Tuesday Night Storms Expected

Relief from the smoke may arrive late Tuesday — but it comes at a cost. Thunderstorms are forecast between 10 p.m. Tuesday and early Wednesday, bringing:

  • Heavy rainfall
  • Gusty winds up to 20 mph
  • Localized flooding
  • Small hail, particularly in Duluth, Aitkin, and along U.S. Highway 2

Motorists, especially commuters along U.S. Highway 53, are urged to drive cautiously and monitor alerts.
