Three law enforcement officers were injured by a barrage of gunshots after a man opened fire on a Border Patrol post in deep south Texas on Monday morning, according to police. The assailant was then shot and killed.
At a press conference, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez stated that 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda started shooting at the McAllen, Texas, facility before six in the morning.
“There were many, many, many dozens of rounds fired by the suspect toward the building and toward agents in that building,” Rodriguez said, adding that he was unable to estimate the exact number of rounds fired.
Ismael Garcia, a 10-year member of the McAllen Police Department, was named as one of the injured law enforcement personnel. Rodriguez stated that Garcia, who was hit in the knee, would recover well.
Rodriguez claimed that Mosqueda’s car had Michigan license plates and was linked to a Michigan address. According to officials, the truck had several rounds of ammo as well as other weapons. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, no explosives were discovered.
Rodriguez added that Mosqueda was reported missing at 4 a.m. on Monday and was linked to an address in Weslaco, Texas, which is across the street from McAllen.
Mosqueda’s car had the words “Cordis Die” spray-painted on the side. In Latin, the phrase means “on the day of the heart.” In the 2012 video game Call of Duty: Black Ops II, it was the name of the opposing force.
