Record 156-Pound Fentanyl Seizure in South Carolina Tied to California Brothers

Federal authorities have announced what they’re calling South Carolina’s largest-ever fentanyl seizure, recovering approximately 156 pounds of the deadly drug in a bust that could have potentially saved millions of lives.

California Brothers Indicted in Massive Drug Trafficking Case

Alberto Rios-Landeros, 26, and Chris Guadalupe Rios-Landeros, 23, both of Delano, California, were indicted on charges of conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine. Their arrests followed two coordinated traffic stops in Lexington and Richland counties on July 1, conducted by the DEA, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, and South Carolina State Transport Police.

Deadly Drugs Hidden in Tractor Trailer

Authorities found the drugs concealed within a tractor trailer carrying legitimate cargo. The seizure included 156 pounds of fentanyl and 44 pounds of methamphetamine. Investigators believe the substances originated in Mexico and entered the United States via the southern border.

Potential to Kill Millions

According to the DEA, as little as two milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal, meaning the seized amount had the potential to kill up to 36 million people. The estimated street value of the fentanyl alone is $1.7 million.

Part of DOJ’s Operation Take Back America

The arrests are part of Operation Take Back America, a national initiative led by the Department of Justice aimed at dismantling transnational criminal organizations and drug trafficking networks across the country.
