Radioactive shrimp possibly sold at Walmart, FDA warns

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning on Tuesday after frozen prawns that might be radioactive found their way into Walmart shelves.

The FDA discovered three lots of frozen shrimp under the Great Value brand that may have been tainted with the relatively common radioactive isotope cesium-137.

Throw away any Great Value raw frozen shrimp that you recently bought from Walmart that were part of the affected lots. The FDA advised against eating or serving this product. Distributors and merchants should not sell or service this product; instead, they should dispose of it.

The FDA reports that in ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah, Border Patrol officers found cesium-137 in cargo. BMS Foods, an Indonesian company, used the containers.

As they look into the matter, federal officials have now prohibited the entry of any BMS Foods products.

The FDA reports that no food products that were put on the market, including the Great Value frozen shrimp, have tested positive for cesium-137, despite the fact that one sample of breaded shrimp and the containers from BMS Foods tested positive.

Because the product seemed to have been manufactured, packed, or stored in an unhygienic manner, the agency nevertheless issued the conspicuous warning.

The FDA stated that it would keep looking into the shrimp and other items that BMS Foods recently imported.

The FDA stated that until the company fixes the issues that prompted the alert, no implicated shrimp products will be allowed to be sold in the United States.
