Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey will have to make some tough personnel choices in their debut season as general manager and coach.
Glenn and Mougey have been assessing the Jets’ 90-man roster throughout training camp drills. However, the destiny of the Gang Green players who are on the metaphorical roster bubble will probably be decided by the three preseason games. All 32 clubs are required to reduce their rosters to 53 players by August 26. Additionally, 16 players will be added to the Jets practice squad by Glenn and Mougey.
These are the Daily News final Jets 53-man roster projections in light of that, prior of the team’s opening preseason game.
Only two quarterbacks will probably remain on the Jets’ primary roster.Brady Cook and Adrian Martinez will probably vie for the starting quarterback position on their practice squad.
Davis, Allen, and Hall are almost certain to make the roster. Here, Nwangwu wins because he adds value to special teams. Nwangwu’s 99-yard kick return touchdown against the Seahawks last season earned him the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
One of the most interesting plotlines to follow may be who Glenn and Mougey choose to retain at wide receiver. Reynolds seems to be in charge in the clubhouse right now, but no one has established themselves as the Jets’ number two receiver. Johnson’s ability to disengage from defenders is another quality that the coaching staff appreciates.
Despite his struggles with drops during camp, Lazard is an experienced player in a group full of up-and-coming talent. Smith’s quickness and steadiness have been evident throughout the camp. Pritchett is chosen in this case due to his ability to return kicks and his consistent performance during sessions.
Prior to being injured by a high ankle sprain this season, Taylor appeared ready for a big role. The length of Taylor’s absence is unknown, but given his developing rapport with Fields, he is expected to start when he returns. At 6-4 and 226 pounds, Smartt is a big-body tight end with room to grow. Although Ruckert has recently struggled with drops, he is presently listed as a starter on the Jets’ unofficial depth chart.
As the 2025 season approaches, the Jets’ offensive line is among their most potent groupings. Membou was chosen seventh overall in the April draft, one of many tools they have employed in recent years to bolster the line. The Jets should have their two starting tackles for the foreseeable future thanks to their draft selection of Fashanu the year before.
In the league, Myers, Mitchell, Okorafor, and Newman have all contributed significantly. They should all be able to step in and produce in the event of injury.
Johnson tore his Achilles last season, but he should be cleared and ready by Week 1. Johnson is still listed as physically unable to perform, though, so the Jets might want to hold onto an extra defensive lineman in case something goes wrong. Weaver made the roster cut for that reason, but he will need to fend off Braiden McGregor and Payton Page, who are both contenders for the practice squad.
The two guys with the early lead for the defensive tackle position across from Williams are Tufele and Cowart.
Defensively, McCrary-Ball has been a standout during camp, and he is valuable on special teams. With 50 NFL games under his belt, Davis is an experienced player who might serve as a mentor to rookie Mauigoa, who was selected in the fifth round.
During camp, Gardner has been playing as though he is ready for a season of recovery. Stephens’ ability to break up passes and even pull down interceptions has also been excellent.
After he heals from his shoulder injury, Thomas, who has also been reliable, might get rotational snaps on the outside. Oliver’s versatility as a safety and cornerback when needed makes him the Jets’ Swiss Army knife. Stiggers has continuously demonstrated his ability to cover and is still a competent player in his growth.
With their impressive performances throughout camp, Cisco and Adams seemed to have secured the starting two berths here. After Cisco and Adams, Moore and Monroe have also shown themselves to be the top two safety choices.
The Jets’ 2025 punter may not be on the team’s roster at this time. Despite his inconsistent performance during camp, McNamara is the sole punter present. Harrison Mevis will probably be cut because Folk was signed last week and has been the NFL’s most accurate kicker for the past two seasons.
