One Dead, Several Injured in Fiery Four-Vehicle Crash on I-495 in Fairfax County

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A tragic multi-vehicle crash on the Capital Beltway claimed at least one life Monday afternoon and left several others injured, according to Virginia State Police.

The collision occurred shortly before 3:10 p.m. on the northbound side of Interstate 495 near Braddock Road in Fairfax County. Authorities say four vehicles were involved: a Toyota Tacoma, Scion XB, Honda Civic, and a Ford F-150.

Images released by Virginia State Police show a devastating scene — one vehicle overturned across the lane dividers separating the Express Lanes from the regular lanes, while another vehicle, identified as the Scion, was shown with its rear end completely crushed. Debris from the wreckage was scattered across multiple lanes.

Police confirmed that one person died at the scene. A passenger sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, while two others were also transported for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

As of 4:30 p.m., all northbound Express Lanes and all but one regular northbound lane remained closed, significantly impacting traffic in the area.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police have not yet released the identities of those involved.
