NEW YORK (AP) The Cleveland Guardians defeated the struggling New York Mets 3-2 on Tuesday night after Steven Kwan hit the game-winning single with two outs in the seventh inning.
The Guardians overcame an early 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to RBI singles from Kyle Manzardo and Gabriel Arias off starter Clay Holmes. They moved to 18-7 since ending a 10-game losing streak on July 7 and won for the sixth time in seven games.
The Mets, who have lost seven of eight games after a seven-game winning streak, had a sacrifice fly by Pete Alonso in the first inning. In the NL East, they lost to Philadelphia, who were in first place, by 2 1/2 games.
Alonso was still one hit short of Darryl Strawberry’s team record with 251 career home runs.
After Tyrone Taylor singled and Mark Vientos doubled to start the second inning, New York’s offense fell silent against starter Logan Allen and four relievers.
Cade Smith recorded his fourth save with a 1-2-3 ninth after Matt Festa (3-2) struck out two in a spotless sixth.
In the seventh inning, Cleveland put together three consecutive soft singles off Tyler Rogers (4-4) with two outs to break a 2-all tie.
Daniel Schneemann, the right fielder for the Guardians, was taken out in the eighth inning after being struck by a pitch on his right hand and forearm. According to manager Stephen Vogt, the X-rays came back negative.
After a throwing error by first baseman C.J. Kayfus that loaded the bases in the second inning, New York had Allen on the ropes with a 2-0 lead. However, on Francisco Lindor’s scorching ball up the middle, shortstop Arias and second baseman Brayan Rocchio executed a smooth double play to finish the inning.
The last 14 batters were retired by Cleveland pitchers. The final of New York’s four hits came via Jeff McNeil’s leadoff single in the fourth. Since last year, Cleveland has defeated the Mets five times in a row.
Cleveland aims to complete a three-game sweep on Wednesday when RHP Gavin Williams (6-4, 3.33 ERA) starts against Mets LHP David Peterson (7-4, 2.83 ERA).
