An overview, as reported by the Associated Press:

The champion will return to chomp.

After missing last year’s culinary competition for the coveted Mustard Belt, competitive eater Joey Jaws Chestnut stated on Monday that he will be returning to compete in this year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest.

In a post on X, 41-year-old Chestnut said, “This event means the world to me.” It’s an important aspect of my life, a beloved custom, and a celebration of American culture.

The Indiana eater will be participating in the Coney Island competition for the twentieth time.

George Shea, the Major League Eating event producer, announced last year that Chestnut, the 16-time winner of the 10-minute eat-a-thon, would not be taking part because of a contract issue. Chestnut had made an agreement with Impossible Foods, a rival business that produces plant-based meat.

The competitive eater stated in a phone interview on Monday that Nathan’s is the only hot dog brand he has collaborated with and that he has never been included in any of the company’s vegan hot dog advertisements. However, Chestnut admitted that he ought to have been more explicit with Nathan about that.

He stated that we could have done a better job of communicating last year. And I believe we have worked it out. It required some fine-tuning.

Chestnut stated that his contracts with Impossible Foods had been clarified and that he is still employed there.

The president of Major League Eating, Richard Shea, stated that he was glad that everything was settled now but did not want to repeat what had happened the previous year because he found it discouraging.

The greatest competitive eater of all time, in my opinion, is making a comeback to the largest competitive eating event ever. Shea stated, “I don’t think it gets much bigger in any sport.” In terms of both competitive eating and Coney Island, this man is the best performer we have ever seen.

Over the past year, Chestnut said, he has received requests from fans for him to return to the Coney Island event, which is televised live on ESPN and even televised abroad.

He chose to participate in a 5-minute hot dog eating competition against soldiers at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, last year.Back in New York, incumbent champion Miki Sudo claimed her tenth title in the women’s division after downing a record 51 links, while Patrick Bertoletti devoured 58 hot dogs to win his first men’s title.

The world record for the most hot dogs consumed is 76, set by Chestnut.

I encountered many folks during the past year who expressed that life wasn’t the same without me. Chestnut added, “I told a lot of people that I was going to work really hard to make sure I got back there.” And I’m so glad that we all managed to sort it out, including Nathan and Major League Eating.

According to Chestnut, he has been preparing for the major event and has a few more practice sessions before the Fourth of July holiday.

“My body is in tune right now,” he added, describing how he needs to get all those muscles used to cooperating and develop tolerance for eating so many hot dogs. He compared the procedure to a boxer going through drills before a major bout.

Chestnut clarified that, contrary to what some fans believed last year, his business partnership with Impossible Foods does not imply that he has adopted a vegan diet. Chestnut, who explains that he follows a plant-based diet while recuperating from competitive eating events, expressed amazement at the strange backlash he received about it.

I adore beef. I’m going to keep eating meat. However, in order to attempt to bring my body back to normal after a competition, I have to eat really clean, he stated. I am unable to consume pounds of meat each day.
