N.J. man charged with murder in Atlantic City sidewalk shooting

A 37-year-old man was charged Friday in connection with a deadly shooting on a public sidewalk in Atlantic City last month, county authorities said.

The victim, Robert Stanley Davis, was found unresponsive by police outside the Shore Park High Rise Apartments just before 9 p.m. on June 26, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police were responding to a 911 call about a man on the sidewalk near the apartment complex, an affordable housing facility for primarily elderly and disabled residents.

Davis, 40, had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, the prosecutor’s office said. He was pronounced dead on the scene a short time later.

On July 11, Kelsey Smith was taken into custody in connection with Davis’ death. He was charged with murder and unlawful possession of a weapon.

It was not immediately clear if Smith had legal representation, nor whether an initial court appearance had been scheduled.

Both Smith and Davis were from Atlantic City.
