According to New Jersey State Police, a South Jersey driver lost his life Thursday night after his vehicle struck a toll plaza on the Atlantic City Expressway and caught fire.

According to Sgt. 1st Class Charles Marchan, John Warlow, 36, of Hammonton, was traveling west on the highway when his Ford SUV collided with the Egg Harbor Toll Plaza close to milepost 17.6 in Atlantic County. Troops were notified of the crash at approximately 7:58 p.m.

It was unclear whether he was transferred to a hospital and died there or if he was declared dead at the scene.

As of Friday, there was no additional information available and the collision was still being investigated.

After the fire was extinguished, the wrecked car was seen on its side in news footage from 6ABC Philadelphia. At one of the plazas, it stopped under a booth. Three fire trucks were positioned several feet from the wreckage.

A witness’s video of fire erupting from the car was also broadcast by the television channel. The roadway connects suburban Philadelphia with Atlantic City and a number of coastal sites and is operated by the South Jersey Transportation Authority. A request for comment on the toll plaza damage and any ensuing traffic disruptions was not immediately answered by the agency.

Similarly, in December 2021, two brothers and their sister, who was 14 years old, perished when their car slammed into the toll plaza and caught fire. There were minor injuries to another 12-year-old girl in the vehicle.
