A 79-year-old driver crashed into two cars in the Bronx before hitting a light pole — killing his passenger and injuring himself and six others, police said.
Stella Nyarko-Dei, 71, was in the back seat of a 2003 Toyota Avalon that was heading west on Bartow Ave. in
Co-Op City
when the elderly driver crashed into a 2020 Hyundai Sonata being driven by a 38-year-old woman, then hit a 2011 Acura RDX with a 34-year-old woman behind the wheel before finally smashing into a light pole around 5:30 p.m. Friday, according to authorities.
The impact sent the Hyundai careening into an unoccupied parked car. In total, eight people, including the drivers and their passengers, were involved in the smashup.
Medics rushed the Toyota driver, Nyarko-Dei, and a 69-year-old woman riding in the front passenger seat to
Jacobi Medical Center,
where Nyarko-Dei died.
The Hyundai driver and an 11-year-old boy in the front passenger seat were also rushed to Jacobi Medical Center — as were the Acura driver and her 24-year-old and 34-year-old male passengers, police said.
The survivors of the horrific crash were all in stable condition and expected to recover.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known, and all the drivers remained at the scene, police siad. There were no immediate arrests as cops continue to investigate.
Nyarko-Dei lived in the Bronx, less than a mile from the crash site.
