When they pulled over on Route 27 to pick up a fallen potted plant, one person was killed and another was critically hurt Wednesday night in Edison, according to authorities.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., a potted plant fell from the Edison residents’ vehicle and landed in the southbound lane of Route 27, causing them to halt in the northbound left lane.
Both were struck by a car going south as they crossed the street to get it.
The motorist, who lived in Highland Park, claimed to be nearing a hilltop and would not be able to see them.
According to authorities, the motorist struck both individuals despite swerving.
At the scene, Tuan Phan passed away. The second individual had severe injuries and was admitted to the hospital.
The Edison Police Serious Crash Investigation Team is still looking into the event, and no charges have been brought.
