A recent AP soccer story is as follows:
(AP) INGLEWOOD, CAIn Saturday night’s CONCACAF Gold Cup opening, defending champion Mexico overcame a sluggish start to upset the Dominican Republic 3-2.
Edson Lvarez of West Ham opened the scoring in the 44th minute, followed by goals from Fulham’s Ra l Jimnez in the 47th and defender C sar Montes in the 53rd.
With 40 goals, Jimnez ranks third on the Mexican career scoring record, behind only Javier Hernandez’s 52 and Jared Borgetti’s 46.
To begin with, it was a good victory. I’d like to commend my staff for keeping their emotional equilibrium. Javier Aguirre, the coach of Mexico, described the victory as fair while being a hard-fought one. Our competitor performed admirably, demanded us, and did a lot of merit.
The other Group A nations, Costa Rica and Suriname, will play on Sunday in San Diego.
“There are things that need to be corrected, but we were patient, we scored three goals, and it was an entertaining match for the fans,” Aguirre continued.
As one of the four group winners in League B of the CONCACAF Nations League, the Dominicans secured their first qualification with goals from Peter Gonz lez in the 51st minute and Edison Ascona in the 67th.
54,309 people watched the game at SoFi Stadium, with the majority of them cheering for Mexico.
It was unclear how many Mexican supporters would show up for the game. Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, encouraged American officials not to target gamegoers on Friday.
In a series of raids in Southern California’s Home Depot parking lots and LA’s fashion district, federal immigration agents have detained dozens of workers. Over 100 individuals have been taken into custody.
Playing Suriname on Wednesday in Arlington, Texas, as part of a doubleheader that also has the Dominican Republic playing Costa Rica, Mexico can secure a trip to the quarterfinals.
