Mets
legend
Ron Darling
knows what it takes to be an All-Star. It took him three seasons to finally earn the honor to participate in the 1985 Midsummer Classic as a member of the Mets.
When MLB decided to approve the selection of
Milwaukee Brewers
phenom
Jacob Misiorowski
, who’s only made five big league starts (25 2/3 innings), Darling wasn’t happy.
“Listen, let’s separate the kid from the choice,” Darling said on Saturday,
via Awful Announcing
. “Because he had nothing to do with it. So, to have any vitriol against Misiorowski is ill-placed and silly. It’s not his fault they decided to do it. But it can also be kind of a joke to the game and the integrity of the game that he has only pitched five times.
“Now, you were saying that it was 11 times (Paul) Skenes pitched? And it didn’t really raise any eyebrows around baseball. I think the problem is that there are so many deserving pitchers out there that look askance at this choice. But again, separating this young man, who has gotten off to a great start in his career… He has nothing to do with the choice. But it’s a bad choice for baseball.”
Like the rest of the baseball world, Darling’s been impressed with Misiorowski’s start in the big leagues. But to allow him to participate in the All-Star game over players like
Philadelphia Phillies
starter
Christopher Sánche
z, who’s 8-2 with the fourth-lowest ERA (2.50) in the National League, isn’t fair.
The 2025 All-Star Game has been a big topic of discussion in Queens. Like Sánchez, the Mets have a player who is very much deserving of being selected: right fielder Juan Soto.
Soto did not make the All-Star game this year despite being in the Top 10 in OPS (.905) and home runs (23), which is also the team lead, in the National League.
After a slow start, the four-time All-Star is batting .317 with 15 home runs and 31 RBIs in his last 41 games.
