According to the FDNY, an assailant fire on Friday destroyed three penthouses on top of a residential complex in the Upper East Side, injuring three firefighters.

The roof of a posh six-story building on E. 95th St., close to Second Ave, caught fire shortly after ten in the morning.

At a press conference on Friday afternoon, FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief James Canty stated that the fire swiftly spread to the cockloft, which is the space on the top floor between the ceiling and the roof. Some penthouses on the roof were affected by the fire that spread into that area.

Canty stated that the building’s top story has three penthouses and that when the FDNY arrived, the fire was threatening to spread to nearby buildings.

According to Canty, we were able to stop the spread of the fire by opening up the space, applying water to it, and containing it to the original building.

“It was a good feat on a day like today,” Canty said, adding that the flames heated up quickly on Friday because to the 87-degree temperatures, which threatened to overheat firemen wearing heavy bunker gear.

According to officials, three firefighters were slightly hurt while battling the fire. In roughly an hour, the fire was put out.

There were around 170 firefighters and emergency medical workers present.

Officials said that no residents of the building were hurt.

Canty said the fire started on the roof, despite early reports suggesting it might have been caused by a buildup of gases in the basement.

The investigation into the cause of the incident has been left to FDNY fire marshals.
