Man used fake police lights to pull over his wife’s lover before shooting him dead, police say

According to police, the individual who is suspected of killing a man in Howell Township pulled over his victim using emergency LED lights that resembled an unmarked police cruiser before shooting and killing him.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Rolando Acte Mejia, 36, was discovered dead inside his vehicle on White Street by police at approximately 6:40 a.m. on Thursday. According to investigators, Mejia was also seeing the man who shot him’s wife.

The defendant, Juan Mejia Yanza, 33, is shown in surveillance footage taken on Wednesday night following Mejia in his vehicle from the victim’s home to a Southport Drive address and finally to a Wawa parking lot. Yanza drove Mejia to White Street, the scene of the incident, an hour later.

The affidavit claims that Mejia’s car was pulled over by Yanza’s car’s LED emergency lights inside the windshield, which looked like an unmarked police cruiser.

Early Thursday morning, Yanza can be seen on camera making his way back to his home in Howell Township.

According to the affidavit, Yanza’s wife had a romantic relationship with Mejia while he was living with her and her family.

According to the complaint, the lady informed police that she started talking to Mejia on the phone the night of the murder when he was parked at Wawa at about 10:30 p.m. She informed investigators that after an hour or so of talking, Mejia told her that a policeman was pulling him over and hung up right away, but she did not hear sirens. According to the affidavit, Mejia did not return any of the ensuing calls or texts.

According to a news release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Yanza was brought into custody at his Howell residence on Saturday without any problems.

The criminal complaint charges him with first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree weapons.
