Early on Saturday, a man detained on Rikers Island passed away, making him the tenth prisoner to pass away this year.

The inmate was discovered unconscious in his cell at the George R. Vierno Center around 12:25 a.m., according to City Department of Correction officials, who verified the death.

Medical assistance was requested, and DOC officials touring the cells provided assistance; nonetheless, the guy was declared deceased shortly before 1 a.m. His identity was not revealed right away.

A thorough investigation of the incident’s circumstances was promised by Correction Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie.

Edwin Quispe, 33, was discovered unconscious in a restroom at the Rikers Eric M. Taylor Center last month and was pronounced deceased, according to authorities. Investigations on the cause and circumstances are ongoing.

The fatality on Saturday doubles the number of detainees who died at local detention facilities in 2024, bringing the city’s jail-related death toll to ten this year.

Nine people died in jail in 2023, 19 in 2022, the first year of Mayor Adams’ administration, and 16 in 2021, the last year of Mayor de Blasio’s term.
