Man charged with attempted murder after beating his 71-year-old mother with a cane, cops say

Authorities said a 44-year-old man from New Jersey was booked on Friday for allegedly using a cane to beat his own mother at a mobile home.

In a statement released Saturday afternoon, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer charged Manchester resident Joseph Cavallaro with attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the incident.

According to officials, a female in distress was reported to police officers at the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Community in Manchester at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Friday.

Officers said that upon arrival, they discovered a female victim, age 71, who appeared to have suffered facial and body injuries. The woman’s status was labeled as critical but stable after she was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced Saturday that Cavallaro had assaulted and battered the victim with a cane after a follow-up investigation found that the victim was Cavallaro’s mother.

Cavallaro was first arrested at the mobile home, according to the police. However, he was taken to the Community Medical Center in Toms River following a medical incident. He was noted as being in stable condition there.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Cavallaro will be transferred to the Ocean County Jail upon his release in order to await a detention hearing.

As part of the joint investigation, Prosecutor Billhimer acknowledged the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Manchester Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crime Unit.
