Long Island totals 52 DWIs, 11 fireworks arrests over July 4 weekend

Over the extended Independence Day weekend, extended Island police arrested 11 people for illegal pyrotechnics and 52 for drunk driving.

According to Newsday on Tuesday, nine people were arrested for charges involving fireworks, and 17 people were busted for DWI in Nassau County. Two arrests for fireworks and 35 arrests for DWI occurred in Suffolk County.

The DWI arrests demonstrate the department’s increased DWI patrols and underscore its dedication to road safety, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina told the publication.

Arrests for fireworks, however, were much lower than in previous years. 42 persons were arrested for fireworks-related charges in Nassau County alone in 2023. Before falling to nine this year, that number fell to 34 in 2024.

Despite warning the public in advance that they would be closely monitoring the roadways during the busy holiday, state troopers wrote over 10,000 fines around New York over the weekend. State police released data on Tuesday showing that Troop L issued 656 tickets on Long Island.

Troops detained 210 people for drunk driving throughout the state. However, compared to 2024, when over 12,000 people received tickets and 335 were arrested for DWI, both the total number of tickets and DWIs were lower.
