Long Island police officers
fatally shot a man who was holding a knife
and threatening an already wounded man, authorities said Sunday.
Cops said
Emilson Yoan Ordonez-Vanegaz
, 29, first stabbed a 44-year-old man in the neck on Sunday morning in Centereach, according to News 12 Long Island.
That prompted a 911 call, and officers began
providing aid to the wounded man
, who has not been publicly identified, WABC reported.
Officials said while cops were on the scene,
Ordonez-Vanegaz appeared in a clearing in a nearby wooded area holding a 10- to 12-inch knife
, according to Newsday. Ordonez-Vanegaz ignored police commands and advanced toward the wounded man, and cops responded by shooting him, Suffolk County police said.
“[The suspect] yells, he approaches the victim, who was being treated, and attempts to stab him again,”
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina
told Newsday. “One of our officers pulled out his weapon, fired at the suspect, striking him.”
Ordonez-Vanegaz was transported to Stony Brook Hospital, where
he was pronounced dead
, Patch reported. Investigators could not find his last known address, and Catalina said he didn’t have housing.
Police believe the altercation involved only Ordonez-Vanegaz and the other man. The New York Attorney General’s office, which probes all police shootings in the state, had investigators at the scene.
