LOS ANGELES (AP) Layup, camera, and lights.
Athletes are getting another opportunity to compete behind the camera in the NBA Summer League. Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett and Hollywood heavyweights Mark Wahlberg and Deon Taylor will help bring the Summer League Film Festival back to Las Vegas on July 17.
In addition to including stories created by NBA players from the past and present, such as Nickola Jokic, Luguentz Dort, Tony Allen, Nate Robinson, Cole Anthony, Keyon Dooling, and Udonis Haslem, the three-day festival will feature big-screen storytelling through 34 carefully chosen projects.
Garnett, who won the NBA title with the Boston Celtics, stated, “There are a lot of NBA players who own production companies.” He was a co-founder of Content King Studios, a production firm.
Garnett stated that he wishes to draw attention to filmmakers who are narrating genuine, life-like tales.
According to him, the SLFF is a fantastic chance to meet together, share our initiatives, offer each other flowers for our hard work, and have a chance to get projects funded and even sold.
The Thomas & Mack Center’s Strip View Pavilion, the longstanding home of Summer League, which was cofounded in 2004 by Warren LeGarie and Albert Hall, will host the second annual film festival.
Wahlberg, who owns the production business Unrealistic Ideas, said, “I’ve always been a big hoops fan, so it’s amazing to see NBA players bring these incredible stories to life.”
The Hidden Empire Film Group’s Deon and Roxanne Avent Taylor were hired to help sportsmen hone their acting skills and learn about the craft of filmmaking.
Athletes nowadays are more than just athletes. According to Deon Taylor, director of Black and Blue, The Intruder, Meet the Blacks, and Fatale, they are storytellers, creators, and influential people around the world. This is Hidden Empire’s latest sports-related endeavor. In March, the company collaborated with Skydance Sports and the NFL to organize film training sessions for over 20 active and retired NFL players.
Taylor referred to the partnership with Hall, Garnett, Wahlberg, and the NBA as a “culture shift.” According to him, the festival will assist sportsmen in managing their story on television, movies, and other media.
“We’re redefining the intersection of sports, art, and culture together,” Taylor added.
UNLV: Kings of Vegas, which tells the little-known tale of the UNLV Runnin Rebels, will debut during the festival. The documentary will feature interviews with well-known people including Jimmy Kimmel, Chuck Dand, and Snoop Dogg. It is produced by Damien Big Percy Roderick, Hidden Empire Film Group, and former UNLV stars Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Greg Anthony.
The festival will also feature a finale party and a preview showing of Tony Allen: The Grindfather, among other exclusive activities.
According to Hall, the SLFF crew is committed to promoting these incredible movies and filmmakers who are creating all kinds of material for the NBA Summer League. We think the 2025 SLFF is ready to take off and expand the second weekend of the Summer League because of all the amazing filmmakers that submitted films this year.
