Georgians Advocate for Mental Impairment Exemption from Death Penalty at Capitol Event

Cathy Harmon-Christian, Executive Director of Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (GFADP), recently shared insights about their upcoming advocacy day at the Georgia Capitol on February 12th.

The event aims to rally support for House Bill 123 (HB123), a critical piece of legislation seeking to correct a longstanding issue with the state’s death penalty laws.

Addressing a Legislative Flaw

Georgia remains one of the few states that still subjects individuals with mental impairments to the death penalty. Harmon-Christian emphasized the urgent need to rectify this injustice. “It’s time Georgia joined other states in adopting a more humane approach to justice,” she stated.

HB123 aims to provide clear guidelines concerning the use of lethal force in cases involving individuals with developmental challenges. The bill has bipartisan support, with backing from Speaker Jon Burns, signaling a promising step forward.
