Jets Super Bowl champion dies at 83

Gerry Philbinhas, a former defensive end for the Jets, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 83.

Philbin, a University of Buffalo graduate selected in the third round of the 1964 AFL draft, won the Super Bowl with the Jets in 1969.

His family told ESPN that dementia was the reason of death.

During his ten-year career, Philbin was inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor in 2011 and was named a two-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro.

John Schmitt, a former center for the Jets from 1964 to 1974, thought back on his time with Philbin.

Schmitt stated on the team’s website, “I do remember when we played the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoff game [after the 1969 season], he had a separated shoulder.” His chest was encircled by a half-inch-thick leather harness, and the leather arm piece was secured to the chest piece by a chain-link fence. You’ve never seen anything so savage. Additionally, he participated in the whole Kansas City game. I adored the guy, and he was a really tough player.

Rex Ryan, the former head coach of the Jets, also issued a statement, stating that Philbin is one of his favorite players.

He claimed that Gerry Philbin embodied the Jet attitude and an unrelenting drive.
