Even the most ardent MAGA supporters of President Donald Trump are divided on the prospect of U.S. engagement in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
A number of conservatives, including former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson and U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), have encouraged Trump to stay out of another Middle East war. Israel attacked Iran last week, saying that Iran was on the verge of obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Trump’s MAGA camp is now split by his choice to support Israel’s actions against Iran. These differences were brought to light Tuesday in Carlson’s discussion with U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), in which the former Fox News presenter chastised the Republican senator for his ignorance of Iran.
While in the Oval Office on Wednesday, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins questioned Trump about the interview, pointing out that his constituency is divided on the question of whether the US should strike Iran.
Despite some of his supporters ranting against potential U.S. engagement in Iran, Trump denied that there was any dissension within his camp.
No, I have my supporters. America first and “Make America Great Again” are the slogans of my supporters. Trump told reporters, “My supporters don’t want to see Iran have a nuclear weapon.”
Collins: Have you watched the interview between Cruz and Tucker? The question of whether or not to attack Iran appears to be splitting your followers.TRUMP: Not at all. I have supporters. Tucker is a kind person. The other day, he apologized over the phone.Twitter: pic.twitter.com/1oDRWYqhkR
He added that tensions within the party escalated when the former Fox anchor challenged his position on Iran and reaffirmed Cruz’s support for him, prompting Carlson to call him to apologize.
Tucker is a kind person. I was grateful when he called the other day to apologize for what he felt were a few words that were a bit too aggressive. Ted Cruz is also a good man. He’s been with me for a long time, after all. He’s been with me ever since the race, isn’t that right? Trump stated.
Simply put, though, they should oppose me if they believe that Iran’s possession of nuclear weapons is acceptable. However, he noted, no one believes it’s acceptable.
The InfowarsCharlie Kirk of Turning Point USA, Alex Jones, and a few Republican senators have all advised Trump to stay out of foreign conflicts. Earlier this week, Greene stated in an interview with former Representative Matt Gaetz that she is totally against going to war.
Although Trump first distanced himself from Israel’s surprise attack on Friday, which set off the crisis, he has hinted at increased American engagement in subsequent days, stating that he wants something far more significant than a truce. Additionally, the United States has dispatched more warships and military planes to the area.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump for his assistance in the war, describing him as a close friend of Israel and lauding American assistance in protecting Israel’s airspace in a video address to Israelis.
We talk all the time, including last night, he remarked on Wednesday. Our talk was really cordial.
