Illegal Gambling Den in Azalea Park Raided Again by San Diego Police

For the second time in six months, an illegal gambling operation running out of a home in Azalea Park has been shut down by law enforcement. Early Thursday morning, San Diego police officers — including a SWAT unit and members of an FBI violent-crime task force — raided a residence in the 2600 block of Fairmount Avenue.

The operation resulted in the arrest of six individuals and the seizure of 12 illegal gambling machines, two firearms, ammunition, narcotics, and over $1,000 in cash, according to SDPD Capt. Martha Sainz. Two other occupants received citations, while four additional people were questioned and released at the scene.

Authorities first discovered illegal gambling at the location in February while investigating a double shooting in the neighborhood. Although the operation was initially shut down, investigators received tips just a month later that gambling had resumed at the same property.

“Illegal gambling dens often attract other criminal activity,” Sainz said. “That includes narcotics, prostitution, gang-related behavior, noise complaints, and disturbances from constant foot traffic.” She added that the San Diego Police Department continues to prioritize the investigation and closure of such operations across the city.

The recent raid highlights ongoing concerns over repeat illegal gambling activity and the public safety threats it poses in residential communities.
