Flash Flood Warning Issued for Coconino County as Storms Hit White Sage Fire Zone

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for parts of Coconino County, in effect from 4:43 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on July 17, due to intense thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall over the White Sage Fire area.

At the time of the alert, Doppler radar detected heavy rain, with up to 1 inch already fallen and rainfall rates expected to reach 1 inch per hour. The flash flooding is considered life-threatening and could begin at any moment or is already underway.

Areas at risk include:

  • Le Fevre Overlook
  • Jacob Lake
  • Condor Viewing Site
  • Vermilion Cliffs National Monument

U.S. Highway 89A between mile markers 570 and 595 is also included in the warning area.

Multiple creeks, washes, and canyons are in danger of rapid flooding, including:

  • House Rock Wash
  • Rock Canyon
  • Johnson Wash
  • Coyote Wash
  • Wildcat Canyon
  • Jacob Canyon
  • Kaibab Wash
  • Warm Springs Canyon

Residents and travelers in the area are urged to avoid low-lying areas, refrain from crossing flooded roads or washes, and move to higher ground immediately if flooding is observed.
