This is an Associated Press soccer story:
The Club World Cup advances to the knockout stages, which may soon resemble a Champions League clone, following a group stage that was played in front of over a million empty seats.
Nine European teams, four Brazilian teams, and one each from Major League Soccer, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia made it to the round of 16.
The 48 group stage matches, which drew crowds of 3,412 and 6,730 in Orlando, Florida, and 5,282 and 8,239 in Cincinnati, were around 56.7% of the publicly listed capacity. The Associated Press repeatedly asked FIFA to release exact capabilities for the event, but FIFA refused.
With a capacity of 2.95 million, the total stated attendance was 1.67 million, or 34,746 on average.
Only 44.9% of the seats were occupied for the five games in MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which will host the World Cup final the following year, and 50% of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, which hosted the 1994 title game.
The capacity of the other 2026 locations was 44.3% in Atlanta, 61.6% in Philadelphia, 52% in Seattle, and 81.8% in Miami Gardens, Florida.
A request for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to address the tournament and attendance was not answered by FIFA spokesperson Bryan Swanson. “The tournament’s popularity speaks for itself: fans from 168 countries have already purchased tickets… a clear sign of global anticipation and reach,” FIFA stated in a statement.
Through Monday, an average of 360,000 people watched the 12 games that were broadcast with English commentary on TNT, TBS, and truTV. Of them, 409,000 watched seven of the matches on the weekends and evenings.
Palmeiras and Botafogo, an all-Brazilian clash, will off the second round on Saturday. Chelsea and Benfica will play later in the day.
The high-profile matchup between Inter Miami and Lionel Messi and European champion Paris Saint-Germain kicks off Sunday. Bayern Munich and Flamengo will follow.
Real Madrid vs. Juventus and Borussia Dortmund vs. Monterrey are scheduled for Tuesday, while Inter Milan vs. Fluminese and Manchester City vs. Al Hilal are scheduled for Monday.
With the exception of Brazil’s Corinthians’ triumph over Chelsea in 2012, European clubs have won 16 of the previous 17 iterations of the eight-team Club World Cup.
The only side to finish 3-0 in the group stage was Manchester City.
Five of the twelve venues are being used for the World Cup, which will include 104 games instead of 64 and many more without elite players and teams.
The Club World Cup group stage saw five weather delays, and temperatures occasionally soared above 90 degrees (32 Celsius), suggesting that climate change may have an effect on the World Cup the following year. Four of the venues for the tournament the following year, however, feature temperature control and roofs.
One of the best players in soccer, Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid, missed all of the group stage because he was hospitalized and receiving treatment for severe gastroenteritis. His old club, PSG, was the target of a moral harassment complaint that he filed, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office this week.
We need him because he is a top player, among the best in the world, and I don’t want to be overly enthusiastic. On Thursday, Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso stated, “We hope he’s back soon.”
With flashes of genius, Messi, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner who turned 38 on Tuesday, has guided Miami to the knockout stage. He scored his 68th free kick goal for club and country in the 2-1 victory over Porto after hitting the goal frame twice in the first draw against Al Ahly.
The matchup with Messi’s 2021–23 squad, PSG, comes next.
With Botafogo defeating PSG 1-0 in a clash between the current European and South American champions, all four of Brazil’s representatives have advanced to the round of 16.Additionally, Flamengo, Palmeiras, and Fluminense have advanced to the next round.
