Troy Aikman and Lamar Jackson may now enjoy a peaceful beer together after Jackson withdrawn his challenge to the No. 8 spot.
According to the Baltimore Sun and Sports Business Journal, the quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens has retracted his challenge against Aikman’s signature use of the number eight.
Jackson filed to withdraw the challenge Monday after first submitting it in July 2024, according to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s decision to dismiss the case, which was released on Tuesday.
Jackson, who wears the number 8, first claimed that Aikman’s trademark would eventually lead to a misleading association with him because he uses the number in his own branding and merchandising.
Aikman quipped on social media when he first filed the lawsuit in 2024, “Hey Lamar, looks like a worthy conversation over a couple cold EIGHT beers!” Steve Young might be able to arbitrate. Young wore the No. 8 as well.
In 2018, Jackson established his own company, Era 8 Apparel. T-shirts featuring the No. 8 are among the apparel items produced by that brand.
Jackson sued Amazon in 2020 for allegedly selling unlicensed goods that used his registered trademarks.
Jackson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. settled their trademark issue earlier this year after the NASCAR Hall of Famer obtained the right to a different No. 8.
