This is an Associated Press WNBA story:
PORTLAND, ORE. (AP) — After less than three months in office, Inky Son, president of the Portland expansion WNBA club, is quitting the company.
The move was announced Friday by RAJ Sports, which is run by club owners Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal.
According to a statement from the company, Son’s brief but significant stay helped establish the franchise’s foothold in Portland by influencing its early business operations and community involvement initiatives. The organization appreciates Son for her leadership during this significant time and wishes her luck in her next chapter. Son will return to New York, where she was previously located.
The team and the expansion Toronto Tempo are scheduled to begin play in the upcoming season. The Portland team does not yet have a general manager, coach, or name.
On July 15, Portland’s branding is anticipated to be revealed.
In early April, Son was revealed as the team’s first employee. Son was charged with overseeing every facet of the company as president of business operations, including marketing, ticket and sponsorship sales, community relations, finance, legal, and human resources. She was in charge of hiring as well.
Son served as the National Basketball Players Association’s chief administrative officer prior to joining the squad.
In September, Portland was given an expansion team. The franchise was purchased by the Bhathal family for $125 million.
