Los Angeles, CA – A California teenager has been sentenced to four years in juvenile detention for orchestrating a series of “swatting” incidents that terrorized families and law enforcement agencies across the country.
What is Swatting?
Swatting involves making false emergency calls to authorities, typically reporting violent crimes, hostage situations, or bomb threats to prompt a heavily armed police response. The practice is dangerous and has led to injuries and even fatalities in the past.
A Nationwide Trail of Chaos
The 17-year-old, whose name has not been released due to his age, was found guilty of making over 30 false reports between 2022 and 2023. Victims included celebrities, politicians, and online gamers.
“These calls put people’s lives at risk,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Jenkins. “They drained law enforcement resources and caused psychological trauma to innocent families.”
Legal Consequences

The court ruled that the teen’s actions constituted criminal harassment and reckless endangerment. Prosecutors had initially sought a harsher sentence, but the judge considered the defendant’s age and willingness to undergo rehabilitation.
Despite the sentencing, law enforcement agencies continue working to prevent future swatting cases through improved call verification processes and harsher penalties for offenders.
