Both Yanza and Mejia were from Howell.

The nature of their relationship was not immediately clear. Investigators said the shooting was an isolated incident.

Yanza was in custody at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution as of Saturday, awaiting his first court date in Monmouth County Superior Court.

An investigation into the matter remains ongoing.
