The exonerated American woman was able to truly mourn the young woman she was before being falsely accused in Italy for the death of her roommate Meredith Kercher thanks to Hulu’s new limited series about her.
When Knox, 38, and her boyfriend found 21-year-old Kercher brutally killed in the girls’ home in 2007, she was 20 years old and enjoying a semester in Perugia. Sexist media representations, the now-famous Foxy Knoxy nickname, and her arrest—which was partly the result of a coerced confession—with neither a translator nor a lawyer present for the interview quickly followed.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, an eight-part series starring Grace Van Patten in the lead role, was executive produced by Knox and Monica Lewinsky. Knox, who is now an activist for criminal justice reform and podcaster, is extremely appreciative of the New York actress’ performance in the series, which premieres on Wednesday.
At the series’ New York debut on Tuesday, Knox told People, “I felt like I could finally grieve the young person that I was.” Recently, someone said that my glitter had been stolen. They took my brilliance in addition to my freedom. And witnessing [Van Patten] revive it She honored that for me, and for that I am incredibly thankful.
Knox was found guilty in 2009 and given a 26-year prison term. Two years after her acquittal and release, the Italian courts reversed the decision in 2013, by which time Knox had returned to the United States. She was given a 28 1/2-year prison sentence in absentia the following year. In 2015, the decision was reversed, and Knox was ultimately found not guilty.
According to Knox, who told others that Tell Me Lies actress Van Patten, 28, finally pays tribute to the young person I was and the person I am now, “that is something that I’ve struggled with for so long, is how much people have rendered me two-dimensional.”
