Authorities stated Tuesday that a man from Albany has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 93-year-old man.
According to a press release from the Cohoes Police Department, 19-year-old Kemaury T. Everett was charged with second-degree manslaughter and fleeing the scene of a fatal collision.
Just before 10 a.m. on Monday, the incident occurred. Following reports of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian, police arrived at the intersection of Congress and Newark streets.
When responding police reached the location, they found a male victim, Charles Allendorph, age 93. After being transported to Albany Medical Center, he was declared deceased.
According to officials, the vehicle’s driver had left the scene.
Investigators recognized the suspect car and notified local law enforcement agencies after speaking with witnesses.
The Albany Police Department located the car thought to have been involved in the collision less than an hour later. Cohoes Police confiscated the car, which was empty at the time, as proof.
The car’s purported driver was apprehended in Albany at approximately 4 p.m. while trying to report his vehicle as stolen.
Everett appeared in Cohoes City Court on Tuesday morning for his arraignment. According to online court records, he entered a not guilty plea and was ordered to be jailed without bail.
Cohoes Police Chief Todd Waldin told the Times Union that the victim, who lived a few blocks away, was in the area to see a relative.
