SEATTLE (AP) On Wednesday night, Inter Milan defeated River Plate 2-0 and advanced to the second round of the Club World Cup thanks to goals from Francesco Pio Esposito in the 72nd minute and Alessandro Bastoni in stoppage time.
Esposito’s goal came just six minutes after Lucas Mart nez Quarta of River Plate was sent off for snagging Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s legs during a breakaway and blocking a clear attempt on goal.
Manuel Lanzini’s cross to Facundo Colidio in the box nearly gave River Plate the lead two minutes before the red card, but Yann Sommer, the goalie for Inter Milan, saved the day.
In the 93rd minute, Bastoni scored with a left-footed effort from outside the box in front of almost 45,000 spectators.
