SOMERSET, N.J.—Jett Williams underwent a change.

He appeared poised for a swift ascent to the major leagues after all the excitement surrounding his 2023 Mets draft selection (14th overall), his 2023 Mets Minor League Player of the Year Award, and his instant inclusion on every major outlet’s list of top prospects.

During spring training in 2024, he told reporters that he was so sure of his fate that he wanted to be a major leaguer by the age of 21.

Williams has acknowledged that the aim is unlikely to be achieved. He continues to play for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, a team in the Mets Double-A, and will turn 22 on November 3.

The primary reason for Williams’ postponement is his injury-plagued 2024 season, during which a wrist issue limited him to just 33 games.

Consequently, it also gave him a fresh respect for the game.

Williams, who was seated in the visitors’ dugout before to a game against the Somerset Patriots, the Yankees Double-A club, said it was a teaching moment.

Just being more, and kind of approaching things a little bit differently, I think that helped me grow as a person and a player,” Williams continued. Don’t take anything for granted, of course, as I mentioned. Going to every game and playing as much as I can is, I believe, what I’ve really tried to do this year.

Reid Brignac, manager of Double-A Binghamton, is aware of this.

Following a vigorous practice session with his teammates, Brignac remarked, “He works hard and has been a pleasure to coach and be around.” This year, he has put in a ton of labor. He leads the league in every offensive category, you know.

Williams came back in 2025 as a mature athlete, despite the “lost season,” as he put it.

His hitting average has reached a career high.32 stolen bases, 287 batting average (99-for-345), and.881 OPS.

According to Williams, it’s not always about getting hits. During spring training this year, I spoke with the hitting coaches about doing what I do well. Consider the stroll a benefit. I get to steal second and steal third if I go for a walk. The goal is to do everything in your power to assist the team win.

This season, Williams has made the most of his defensive versatility. He has gotten more playing time at center field and second base in addition to his primary position at shortstop.

He has improved defensively even though he is going around the field more. He only had 12 mistakes this season, 10 at short and one each at second and centerfield, compared to 23 at shortstop in 2023.

He’s among our best players overall in terms of defense, Brignac remarked.

It’s evidence of Williams’ growing maturity in the past 12 months.

Williams remarked, “Just go out there and give it your all because you never know when you could be on the field again.”
