The new season finale of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia doesn’t lessen the humor of the show’s usually amusing antics.
However, the episode also has a melancholy tone.
In the episode, which was taped prior to her February death at the age of 78, Lynne Marie Stewart, who for 20 years played Bonnie Kelly and Charlie Kelly’s (Charlie Day) mother on the show, appears.
In the season 17 finale with a Golden Bachelor theme, Danny DeVitos and Frank Reynolds choose a possible partner.
The perpetually happy, charming Bonniei is introduced as a last-minute wildcard addition to the reality show within the episode, The Golden Bachelor Live, which is devoted to Stewart. Because of her past liaisons with Frank, she is included in the group of women he must choose from on the show.
Charlie, her son, becomes enraged by this and throws a salad bowl and its contents in a dramatic manner.

Stewart, who also played Miss Yvonne alongside Paul Reubens in Pee-wee Hermanin Pee-wee’s Playhouse, is honored at the close of the episode.
The episode opens with a number of scenes from our beloved Lynne’s numerous memorable performances on the show.
The montage ends with the song “We’ll love you forever,” which can be heard below.
At the start of the long-running program, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which was founded by Rob Mac (who just changed his name from Rob McElhenney), Stewart joined the ensemble in 2005. The comedic sitcom, which aired on FX before switching to FXX, is currently available on both channels and on Hulu.
However, the season 17 finale has other poignant moments as well.
Carol Kane, who costarred with Danny DeVito in Taxi, also appears as one of the women on The Golden Bachelor, Sam.
From 1980 until 1983, Kane portrayed Simka Dahblitz-Gravas, the girlfriend and later wife of Andy Kaufman’s mechanic, Latka Gravas, on Taxi.
From 1978 until 1983, DeVito portrayed dispatcher Louie De Palmain in the sitcom.
The shockingly sincere and heartwarming bond between Kane’s character Sam and DeVito’s character Frank in the Always Sunny finale is uncommon on the show, particularly when it comes to new characters who aren’t members of the original group.
It’s even more unexpected because, in keeping with his usual style, Frank asks, “Where are all the broads?” at the beginning of his Golden Bachelor episode. (He is unaware that he would prefer the women on the show to be about his age, not significantly younger.)
Frank and Sam, however, clicked in a peculiar way.
In addition to being comedic legends, Kane, 73, and DeVito, 80, of Asbury Park, remain enchantment on screen because of their shared television connection from years ago.
DeVito’s work in Taxi earned him an Emmy in 1981 for best supporting actor. Kane’s roles as an outstanding lead actress in a comedy and a supporting actress earned her awards in 1982 and 1983.
